Sustainability is becoming part of how businesses are judged by customers, partners and investors, even for small companies. A virtual office can be one practical way to reduce the resources your business uses, but it is important to be clear about what it does and does not do.

A virtual office does not make your company “ESG compliant”. ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) covers many areas of how a business is run, and any formal reporting obligations depend on the type and size of your company. What a virtual office can do is support some of your sustainability and good-governance goals, as explained below.

Who must do climate reporting in Singapore?

Singapore is introducing mandatory climate reporting in phases, starting with larger companies:

  • Listed companies on SGX have climate reporting requirements under SGX RegCo’s listing rules, phased by company size.
  • Large non-listed companies, defined by ACRA as companies with annual revenue of at least S$1 billion and total assets of at least S$500 million, will follow at a later date.

In August 2025, ACRA and SGX RegCo extended the timelines for most of these requirements. For the current rules and dates, see the ACRA and SGX RegCo announcement on extended climate reporting timelines and ACRA’s Climate Reporting and Assurance Roadmap. Listed companies should also check updates from SGX RegCo. Timelines have been revised before and may change again, so always check the official sources for the latest position.

Most startups and SMEs are not currently required to file climate reports. However, larger customers, partners or investors may still ask about your sustainability practices. Eligible companies preparing their first climate-related sustainability report may be able to apply for the Sustainability Reporting Grant from EnterpriseSG and EDB.

How a virtual office can help reduce your office footprint

Leasing and running a dedicated office uses resources such as electricity for lighting and air-conditioning, furniture and fit-out materials, and daily travel to the office. If your team does not need a full-time office, a virtual office gives you a professional business address without leasing that space. This can help you:

  • Avoid running and furnishing an office you rarely use
  • Support flexible or remote working
  • Book a meeting room only when you need to meet clients in person

The actual environmental impact depends on how your business operates. For example, your team will still use energy wherever they work. If you report on sustainability, measure your own data rather than assuming a fixed saving.

Good governance: your registered address and official mail

Every Singapore company must have a registered office address in Singapore. ACRA and other parties send official notices there, and it must be open to the public during the hours set by ACRA. Using a professional Singapore virtual office address can help you:

  • Keep your registered address separate from your home address
  • Receive and track official letters and legal notices
  • Get notified when mail arrives, with forwarding or scanning options
  • Keep administration organised, especially if your directors or team work overseas

These are practical good-governance habits. They do not replace your company’s own legal and reporting duties.

Setting up in Singapore from overseas

If you are expanding into Singapore, your company will need a local registered address and a way to receive official correspondence. A virtual office lets you meet this requirement without signing a long-term commercial lease, so you can start operating and decide on a physical office later. See our guide on how to set up a Pte Ltd company in Singapore.

Practical first steps for small businesses

  • Use office space that matches how your team actually works
  • Track simple data, such as electricity use or business travel, if customers or investors may ask for it
  • Keep company records, official mail and filing deadlines organised
  • Check the official ACRA and SGX RegCo sources if you think climate reporting may apply to you in future

FAQs

Does a virtual office make my company ESG compliant?
No. A virtual office can support some sustainability and governance goals, but ESG covers much more, and any reporting duties depend on your company’s type and size.

Can I use a virtual office as my registered address with ACRA?
Yes, if the address meets ACRA’s requirements for a registered office, including being accessible to the public during the required hours. Learn more in our guide: Virtual Office Singapore: what it really is and who it’s for.

Is a virtual office suitable for remote teams?
Yes. It suits teams that work remotely or flexibly and do not need permanent desk space, while still giving the company a professional address.
